Hate and Islamophobia
Updated: Jun 6, 2022
Is enough being done to combat the hate and Islamophobia in society (you can be specific to Canada or London)? Is enough being done to combat all forms of HATE?
Almost a year ago, a man struck a muslim family going on a walk in london ontario. They had done nothing wrong but try to walk in what was once a peaceful neighborhood. This act was nothing but pure hatred towards muslims and nothing but pure evilness. Many were affected by this incident of islamophobia, many were left heartbroken and crushed. This prompted the question, is enough being done to combat islamophobia?
Is enough being done to combat islamophobia? Is enough being done to combat hate in general?
Government wise, nothing is being done to combat the hate. I have not seen any change in government ruling. Most governments just talk the talk, but they don’t walk the walk. This was not the first hate crime against muslims, for example the Quebec mosque shooting and the Toronto mosque volunteer murder. Muslims unfortunately face hate everyday and muslims are unfortunately killed more often than they should just because of their religions. It’s ironic that they’re called terrorists when they are the ones who live in terror and are terrorized. Police forces from across Canada have reported that Muslims are the second most targeted religious group, and while hate crimes against all religious groups have decreased, hate crimes against Muslims have increased following 9/11. That just speaks for itself. If the governments have done something, then why are the acts of hatred towards muslims against muslims increasing. I urge the government to start finding a solution for this growing problem. The muslim community can’t take any more loses.
Community wise, there has been more progress. Friends of Yumnah Afzaal created the Youth Coalition Combatting Islamophobia (YCCI) with the purpose of engaging and centering young people in the fight against Islamophobia. It has grown beyond the initial stages of infancy to a group of young dedicated individuals who are passionate about making the world a better, safer place for everyone. They have organized The solidarity march and the vigil for the remembrance of the Afzaal Family. Visit YCCI website for more information about who they are, their future events and more.
It's great seeing youth taking initiative rather than the government that was supposed to protect the Afzaal family, the victims of the Quebec mosque shooting, all muslims and all of canada. Again I urge the Canadian Government to do something to make their citizens feel more safe and heard.
Tune in for the next blog :)
